Ask Sandy : Need Help with a BaseBall Theme

Question:
We are assisting in planning a wedding for my son and his fiance'.
He plans on leaving for spring training (professional baseball) shortly after the wedding..(Jan 2007). We are trying to incorporate some kind of baseball at the reception...any ideas? Thanks :) Tammie

Answer:
For non-traditional wedding themes you have to sometimes get very creative. The obvious things first, you can decorate tables or centerpieces with items related to the team the groom is going to be playing for. Consider small pennants inserted into your regular centerpieces...

Consider doing your escort cards in the style of a stadium ticket - set these up outside the reception room for guests to pick up as they come in, they then use their "stadium ticket" to find their table and/or seat.

When I was married, my husband was a fighter pilot in the air force and I surprised him at the reception by having an ice sculpture of an F-111 aircraft (rather than the traditional swan, heart, etc). You may be able to have an ice sculpture done of a bat and ball or a glove and ball.

Your DJ or Master of Ceremonies may be able to help you out by incorporating baseball lingo in his MC duties -- you can have a "seventh inning stretch" during the reception, or use clever baseball/sports quips (like "it's a home run!") during the garter toss. A good DJ can easily do this and pull it off so it doesn't seem hokey.

You can setup ball and glove props by your guest book with a poloroid camera (or with a digital camera and printing station). Have someone at the table to take pictures of your guests with the props and put them in a photo guest book. These are a lot of fun and it gives the guests something to do while waiting for you to arrive at the reception. We have photo guest books available at http://www.wherebridesgo.com
